Story Elizabeth Huyink Bolanos
When looking to adopt a Maine Coon, the first thing I did was to go to the TICA website to find a listing of legit and ethical breeders. The breeders need to be registered and sign a code of ethics to be on their website. That was important to me to make sure the kitten’s health and well being was put above the almighty dollar. That is how I found SoCal Maine Coons. From the beginning the owner Alena was great about answering any questions and responding quickly. She is very knowledgeable about her trade and you can tell she has a lot of experience. If she couldn’t respond right away, she would communicate why and when she could resume communication. From the way she runs her business to the way she treats her clients like family you can tell she is so invested in her work. She loves each one of her cats like they are her own kids and that’s the kind of environment that produces healthy, well adjusted kittens. After all the paperwork was finished she allowed a visit at her cattery when my little guy was ready to be picked up. She was very open and transparent about her cattery and invited me into her living room. She spent the next hour or so letting me hold my future kitten, provided me with a list of products that she uses for Maine Coon care and instructed on how to use them. She answered any and every question I had. In the hours and days following the adoption she checked in on us to see how we were adjusting and let me know she was always available no matter how old my cat is. Almost a year later I still have contact with her. I can’t imagine my life without our big boy that we named Leonidas. He is the most loving, playful, gentle, spunky and sweetest cat. I have two other cats and from the get go he was so friendly and wanted to play with them. He came well adjusted and well socialized that we didn’t have any behavior issues to worry about. He isn’t skittish around new people, children or loud sounds. It was like he had always been apart of our family. He wants to be around you without being clingy. He loves cuddles and is so smart that we have taught him tricks like to roll over and fetch. He loves belly rubs and listening to the ice machine. He makes this cute growling sound when he is in his frisky mood and will bring his favorite toy to you when he wants to play. I just recently gave birth and Leonidas is so good around my son. He recognizes that he is vulnerable and is extra careful when he is moving around him and he is so gentle when trying to rub his face or get cuddles with my son. I am so happy with our experience with Alena and SolCal Maine Coons that if I were to adopt again I wouldn’t go anywhere else.
